Alfa Romeo is an Italian premium car manufacturer famous for its lineup of luxury sport vehicles. Aristocrat and investor Ugo Stella founded the company in 1910, but who owns Alfa Romeo now? Nearly one hundred years after its founding, the Fiat Chrysler Automobile Group purchased Alfa Romeo in 2007. Join the Momentum Alfa Romeo team as we dive into the exciting history of who makes Alfa Romeo!
While it’s the Fiat Chrysler Automobile Group who owns Alfa Romeo presently, the brand and its logo have their own unique backstory. The Alfa Romeo story began in Milano, Italy when Stella purchased the assets of failing Italian auto company Darracq and started a new company — Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The brand name was registered as A.L.F.A. in 1910.
Neapolitan entrepreneur Nicola Romeo took over in 1915, converting the factory to manufacture munitions, aircraft engines, compressors, generators, and other components for the Italian and Allied war efforts.
In 2007, Alfa Romeo became a subsidiary of Fiat and became known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Car production resumed in 1919, and the company name was changed to Alfa Romeo the following year. After several decades as a state-controlled company, Alfa began a joint venture with Fiat in 1986 — keeping the company in Italian hands.
Now that you know who owns Alfa Romeo, you may be curious about where your favorite models are produced. Alfa Romeo manufactured its vehicles inside Milan until the 1960s, when production was expanded and moved to multiple plants in the municipalities of Arese, Lainate and Garbagnate Milanese. In the 1990s, the brand moved automobile production to other Italian districts. Today, Alfa Romeo models are produced in Italy at plants in Modena and Cassino:
